Letters, 1882-1956.

This collection contains three letters which concern the planting of bamboo in the United States. The 1882 letters are to G. H. Todd from T. B. Van Buren, U. S. Consul General at Kanagawa, Japan, and George B. Loving of the U. S. Dept. of Agriculture concerning Todd's order and receipt of bamboo roots. The 1956 letter to Walter C. Cummings confirms that Todd's planting was the first in the U.S. and mentions the potential competition between bamboo and the Southern Pine. The correspondent is Donovan S. Correll of the U.S.D.A.
